The following instructions will allow you to configure your *nix system that is running KDE to connect to The University of Akron's VPN.


You will need to have knetworkmanager, a default component of KDE, installed to complete the operation. If you do not have knetworkmanager, you will need to install it. On Debian based systems (this includes Ubuntu) you can install it by typing into a command prompt (terminal)

    sudo apt-get install knetworkmanager network-manager-vpnc

To begin, you must right click on KNetworkmanager's icon located in the system tray. It will bring up a menu that looks like the one one in this image. Select OPTIONS and then CONFIGURE.

Next, Click on the ADD button.

Create new VPN connection (Required Info)

In the window that opens, you must name the VPN connection, you can choose any name that you wish. Gateway must be vpn.uakron.edu and the groupname must be Zipnet

Create new VPN connection ("Optional" Info)

Under Optional information, you must check 'Override username' and enter your UAnetID. Click OK to close the create new VPN window, and then OK again to close the settings window.

Enter your passwords. Group Password is "zippy"

You can now right click on the Knetworkmanager icon and select VPN Connections. Your newly created network should appear. When you connect, you will be prompted for your password (this is your UANetID password, and your Group password (this is "zippy")
