Virtual Private Network is a connection that emulates that you are connected to network you are actually not connected to. This is useful in obtaining network drives such as the H: drive or accessing the Library resources.

With Vista RC1 you can setup a VPN by:

  1. enter control panel
  2. select Network and Sharing Center
  3. On left side of screen, select 'set up a connection or network'
  4. chose 'Use my Internet connection (VPN)'
  5. enter vpn.uakron.edu for the Internet Address
  6. Destination Name can be whatever you wish (Uakron VPN for example)
  7. Username = your uanet ID (NO @uakron.edu)
  8. Password = your password... leave domain empty

Next time: Open Control Panel, choose Network and Sharing Center choose Connect to a network and the VPN connection you created should appear in the list.

  1. Go to the Start button and double click Control Panel
  2. Select network connection (if not show click switch to classic view)
  3. On the top left hand corner click “create new network connection”
  4. Click the next button in the new window
  5. Then click the option for “connect to the network at my workplace” and click the “next button
  6. Then click the option for “Virtual Private Network” and click the “next” button

  10. Then choose your option for “create this connection for” and click the “next” button
  11. Click the box that says “Add a shortcut to this connection on the desktop” so you can access this easily
  12. Then click the “finish” button

  1. Open 'My Computer' then 'Control Panel' then 'Network and Dial-Up Connections'
  2. Open 'Make New Connection'
  3. Click 'Next'
  4. Select 'Connect to a private network through the Internet'
  5. Click 'Next'
  6. Select 'Do not dial the initial connection'
  7. Click 'Next'

  11. Click on 'Add a shortcut to my desktop'
  12. Click 'Finish'

  1. Click 'Start' then 'Settings' then 'Control Panel.'
  2. Once you are there, open 'Add/Remove’ Programs' then click on the 'Windows Setup' tab.
  3. Double-click on the word 'Communications' in the scroll box (if you uncheck 'Communications' you are going to have some serious problems; so if you do that by accident, click the 'Cancel' button).
  4. Once the 'Communications' window is open, scroll all the way down in the scroll box and click on the box next to 'Virtual Private Networking' only if it is not already check marked.
  5. Click 'OK' then click 'OK' again.
  6. If VPN was not already installed, it will now proceed to install it.
  7. At this point, it may ask for the Windows CDROM; if you don't have it handy, you may try to type in c:\windows\options\cabs or c:\windows\options\install or c:\windows\system when it asks where to look for the files.
  8. If this does not work, then you must get a hold of a Windows CDROM, for your version of Windows, to continue the install.
  9. Open 'My Computer' then 'Dial-Up Networking.'
  10. Open 'Make New Connection'
  11. Type in UAnet VPN in the first box

  15. Type in vpn.uakron.edu in the box
  16. Click 'Next'
  17. Click 'Finish'
  18. Right-click on 'UAnet VPN' and then 'Create Shortcut'
  19. Click 'Yes'

All versions

You should now have an icon on the desktop that says 'UAnet VPN' somewhere in the name.

  1. To use VPN, you must first logon to the Internet (doesn't have to be dial-up to UA), and then open the icon on your desktop that has 'UAnet VPN' somewhere in the name. It will ask for your 'User name' (this is your valid UAnet ID. It is also the beginning part of your University of Akron email address) and 'Password' (the password that goes with your UAnet ID).
  2. Click 'Connect' and it should do just that (sometimes it takes almost a minute).

Macintosh OSX

Note: You must have Mac OS 13.3 or later (10.2 does not work)

  1. Open the "Internet Connect" application which is located within the "Utilities" folder within the "Applications" folder
  2. Set up a new PPTP VPN connection as configured in the box below
  3. Make sure that the Internet application or web browser that will be used is not running before connecting to the VPN server
