Virtual Private Network is a connection that emulates that you are connected to network you are actually not connected to. This is useful in obtaining network drives such as the H: drive or accessing the Library resources.

Setup

Windows

VISTA

Note: Vista RAS Connections are Failing

Vista does not support the MSCHAPv1 protocol for authentication. The protocols supported on Vista are PAP, CHAP, MSCHAPv2, PEAP and EAP. The default is MSCHAPv2. Hence, if the server is not configured for or does not support any protocol other than MSCHAPv1 then connection setup will fail.

As of 4/5/2007, Vista VPN connections will not fully connect to the University of Akron's VPN. WAN is aware, yet not word on a plan for resolution is in place.

  5. Then click the option for Connect to the network at my workplace and click the Next button

  2. Open Make New Connection

95/98/ME

  1. Click 'Start' then 'Settings' then 'Control Panel.'
  2. Once you are there, open 'Add/Remove’ Programs' then click on the 'Windows Setup' tab.
  3. Double-click on the word 'Communications' in the scroll box (if you uncheck 'Communications' you are going to have some serious problems; so if you do that by accident, click the 'Cancel' button).
  4. Once the 'Communications' window is open, scroll all the way down in the scroll box and click on the box next to 'Virtual Private Networking' only if it is not already check marked.
  5. Click 'OK' then click 'OK' again.
  6. If VPN was not already installed, it will now proceed to install it.
  7. At this point, it may ask for the Windows CDROM; if you don't have it handy, you may try to type in c:\windows\options\cabs or c:\windows\options\install or c:\windows\system when it asks where to look for the files.
  8. If this does not work, then you must get a hold of a Windows CDROM, for your version of Windows, to continue the install.
  9. Open 'My Computer' then 'Dial-Up Networking.'
  10. Open 'Make New Connection'
  11. Type in UAnet VPN in the first box
  12. Click on the arrow under 'Select a device:'
  13. Select 'Microsoft VPN Adapter'.
  14. Click 'Next'
  15. Type in vpn.uakron.edu in the box
  16. Click 'Next'
  17. Click 'Finish'
  18. Right-click on 'UAnet VPN' and then 'Create Shortcut'
  19. Click 'Yes'

All versions

You should now have an icon on the desktop that says 'UAnet VPN' somewhere in the name.

  1. To use VPN, you must first logon to the Internet (doesn't have to be dial-up to UA), and then open the icon on your desktop that has 'UAnet VPN' somewhere in the name. It will ask for your 'User name' (this is your valid UAnet ID. It is also the beginning part of your University of Akron email address) and 'Password' (the password that goes with your UAnet ID).
  2. Click 'Connect' and it should do just that (sometimes it takes almost a minute).
