If you are off campus you will need to connect to the VPN in order to send email using Apple Mail.
Alternatively you can configure Apple Mail to use your local ISP's SMTP server.

These instructions are for configuring Apple Mail the first time. If you need to create a new account after the wizard has been displayed, you can add an account by choosing FILE and then Add Account. To view accounts that already exist on your computer, choose MAIL and Preferences.

Student Email System

  1. Fill out the form
    • Enter your name
    • Enter your full UA email address
    • Enter your UAnetID password
  2. Click Continue
  3. Set the following
    • Account Type: IMAP
    • Description: UA Email
    • Incoming Server:
    • Username: Your UAnetID
    • Password: Your UAnetID Password
  4. Click Continue
  5. Enter the following
    • Description: UA SMTP
    • Outgoing Mail Server:
    • Use Authentication: Check this box
  6. Hit Show Certificate, Check the box next to "Always Trust ""... and then Connect
  7. You may be prompted for your computer's password
  8. Click Create and your set

Faculty/Staff Email System

  1. Open Apple Mail, and click FILE, then Add Account
    • Enter your full name, as you would like it to appear to mail recipeients.
    • Enter your email address as
    • Enter your password.


  1. Click Continue. Next,
    • Change the account type to EXCHANGE
    • Description should be somthing descriptive, but it can be anything you want.
    • Incomming mail server should be
    • Username is your UAnetID
    • Password is your UAnet Password
    • Outlook Web Access Server should be (dont forget the "s" in https)


  1. Click continue, and configure the SMTP server settings.
    • Description should be somthing descriptive, but it can be anything you want.
    • Outgoing Mail server should be (you can also set it as your own ISP's smtp server, ask ZipSupport for clarification if needed)
    • CLEAR the Use only this server checkbox. This box should be Unchecked.
    • Use Authentication should be Unchecked.
Note: Click Continue. Apple Mail will attempt to contact It will not be successfull and will attempt to stall. You must click cancel, then click continue again, to advance.


  1. Click continue, and configure the SMTP security settings.
    • Leave Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) UNCHECKED
    • Authentication should be set as NONE


  1. Click continue.
    • Verify your settings, and click CREATE Apple Mail is now configured to connect to UA's Exchange server.
