Windows VPN Setup
Step by step tutorial video
Obtaining and installing the Cisco VPN Client
The VPN client can now be found in "My Akron Experience" under the Technology Support section of "My Akron Experience". The file may also be obtained from the ZipSupport Center. You will need a USB flash drive, or other portable media to which our support experts will copy the file.
Alternatively, you can connect directly to the Home Use Downloaded center: http://uakron.onthehub.com/
For Windows 10
The Cisco VPN client does not work in Windows 10. You can use a VPN client made by ShrewSoft instead.
Download the latest version by visiting https://www.shrew.net/download/vpn and selecting the Installer option at the top of the table. The OS Support does not mention Windows 10, but it will work.
Once installed, you can find the software as the “VPN Access Manger” under “ShrewSoft VPN Client” in the Start menu if a shortcut was not created on the desktop during install. Open the software and click the Add button. Fill out the various tabs as follows –
1. General: Add host name – vpn.uakron.edu
2. Client: No change
3. Name Resolution: No Change
4-1. Authentication -Local Identity Tab : Change Authentication Method to “Mutual PSK + XAuth”
Identification Type to “Key Identifier”
Key ID String to “ Zipnet” (must use capital Z)
4-2. Authentication -Remote Identity Tab : No change
4-3. Credentials Tab : Change Pre Shared Key to "zippy"
5.Phase 1, Phase 2, Policy: No Change
Click Save and give the connection a name. Double click the connection and enter your uanet credentials to login. You can disconnect from the software window or by right-clicking the ShrewSoft icon in the system tray.
Fix for Windows 8 and 8.1
IMPORTANT: The VPN client must be installed before applying this fix.
We have received reports that users who have installed the VPN on 8/8.1 have had issues with their machine not being able to go to sleep.
There is a way to get the VPN to work on Windows 8 and 8.1, but it is not an official fix supported by either Windows or Cisco. What that means is that we can not guarantee with 100% certainty that it will work on your computer, however it should most likely work. In order to get the VPN to work, install the VPN and then download this for 64 bit machines or download this for 32 bit machines file. After downloading the file just open it and click yes when it asks you if you want to let it make changes to your computer. If you are curious as to what exactly the file does, just right click on it after downloading and choose Edit
