- Then choose your option for Create this connection for and click the Next button
- Click the box that says Add a shortcut to this connection on the desktop so you can access this easily
- Then click the Finish button
- Alternately if you are able to enable a "DMZ" on your router, you may try that as well.
This may or may not fix the issue. In some cases this trick has shown to work.
2000 (Legacy)
- Open My Computer then Control Panel then Network and Dial-Up Connections
- Open Make New Connection
- Click Next
- Select Connect to a private network through the Internet
- Click Next
- Select Do not dial the initial connection
- Click Next
- Type the following in the box
vpn.uakron.edu
- Click Next
- Type in UAnet VPN in the first box
- Click on Add a shortcut to my desktop
- Click Finish
95/98/ME (Legacy)
- Click 'Start' then 'Settings' then 'Control Panel.'
- Once you are there, open 'Add/Remove’ Programs' then click on the 'Windows Setup' tab.
- Double-click on the word 'Communications' in the scroll box (if you uncheck 'Communications' you are going to have some serious problems; so if you do that by accident, click the 'Cancel' button).
- Once the 'Communications' window is open, scroll all the way down in the scroll box and click on the box next to 'Virtual Private Networking' only if it is not already check marked.
- Click 'OK' then click 'OK' again.
- If VPN was not already installed, it will now proceed to install it.
- At this point, it may ask for the Windows CDROM; if you don't have it handy, you may try to type in c:\windows\options\cabs or c:\windows\options\install or c:\windows\system when it asks where to look for the files.
- If this does not work, then you must get a hold of a Windows CDROM, for your version of Windows, to continue the install.
- Open 'My Computer' then 'Dial-Up Networking.'
- Open 'Make New Connection'
- Type in UAnet VPN in the first box
- Click on the arrow under 'Select a device:'
- Select 'Microsoft VPN Adapter'.
- Click 'Next'
- Type in vpn.uakron.edu in the box
- Click 'Next'
- Click 'Finish'
- Right-click on 'UAnet VPN' and then 'Create Shortcut'
- Click 'Yes'
You should now have an icon on the desktop that says 'UAnet VPN' somewhere in the name.
- To use VPN, you must first logon to the Internet (doesn't have to be dial-up to UA), and then open the icon on your desktop that has 'UAnet VPN' somewhere in the name. It will ask for your 'User name' (this is your valid UAnet ID. It is also the beginning part of your University of Akron email address) and 'Password' (the password that goes with your UAnet ID).
- Click 'Connect' and it should do just that (sometimes it takes almost a minute).
